The telescopefish is a deep-sea species that looks unusual because of its large, tubular eyes that point forward like a pair of binoculars. Unlike most fish with round eyes, this design helps them capture the faintest traces of light in the dark ocean, giving them an advantage in spotting prey or predators in near-total darkness. They live in the mesopelagic to bathypelagic zones of the open ocean, usually at depths of about 500 to 2,000 metres (1,600–6,600 ft). They also have an elongated body
